Concept1:Strange Bench
This one is similar with Crystal's talking box
This is way to similar to Crystals concept. I think the idea of having sensors is a great addition to Crystals concept but we need this to be more different. Perhaps something where the chair actually lights up telling people where to sit or not to sit. For example in a bus or ferry station people will often avoid sitting next to other people. If one person sits down the seat next to them lights up green while the rest stay red.
This idea is good with simple and fun. It is very good to use sensor to break the silence between two strangers and have a good mood and atmosphere to start to make a conversation. Similar with sound idea, if possible to prepare some topic will helpful to keep conversation going or set some categories to match people with same interests.
Even better, using Mackymacky will bring better interaction on our installation, One thing we need to consider is how to make the metal coils invisible, because people may not sit on it if they realize something on the bench.
Thesis:Public spaces are anti-social spaces
Stance:
Support
Site: Queens street, Park, Public transport station
Description:
Ø There are two metal coils built-in the two sides of bench as sensors
to detect is there people sit on the bench.
Ø These coils are connect with Macky Macky. When there are two people
sitting down on the bench, coils will be connected, and this will trigger that
Macky Macky arouses a signal to speaker
Ø Then, the speaker will say “Hi guys, what’s the weather like today?”, “Don’t be nervous, I’m just a robot and do
not try to find me” “Could you guys say Hello to your
friends.”
Target
audience
All of group of people, especially those
who just focus on the mobile phone once they sit down.
Scenario
A young guy sit on a bench in the Queens
street and take out mobile from package to scan his Facebook and Twitter. Few
minutes later, there is someone sit on the other side of this bench and the
facility detects this situation and triggers the speaker to work. In the
beginning, both of them feel weird and curious. And they try to find where
gives out this sound. Few seconds later, they start follow the instruction of
the speaker and start a conversation.
Concept2:Weird Door
Thesis:
Our modern built environment drains joy from our
lives
Stance:
Challenge
How is this challenging the idea? Is it trying to say that doors are exciting parts of our lives? Or is it supporting the idea that our lives are boring so we need to add a weird door to make it more exciting? Perhaps it is more aligned with Thesis three and that it is an invitation and people should see every door as an invitation.
Site:
Open space, like square and park
Site needs to be more specific, would it be in the middle of the park? Or at one of the edges? Would it be easy to see or hard to find?
Description:
Ø This is just a door with a frame.
Ø If could, it should be minimal or even postmodernism style.
Why is this important? Justify the type of people it is trying to appeal to or attract.
Ø There is a key and an instruction about how to open this door.
Ø When people pass this door, it should have a sound filled by
scientific feeling.
Target
audience: All people
Scenario:
There is a door standing on the middle of
grassland or square. A lot of people surround this door with curiosity. Someone
tries to open this door, but he doesn’t follow the instruction and fails. Then,
the other one tries to open this door following the instruction. It is working
and he pass this door with a special sound.
The general idea is good however personally think its too simple. The unopened door people may think it is one abstract sculpture and the final result may make people feel the sense of they tried endeavour to open that door and just receive this.
It is a interesting idea and remind me about the movie Monsters University.People's curiosity may influence their behaviors, once there is someone open the door, the others will know the answer, if we thinking about add different reaction in open the door, people will be more surprised.
Concept 3: Weight Overturn Chair
Thesis:
Our modern built environment drains joy from our
lives
Stance: Deny
Again how does this deny the thesis? If we are denying we are saying that our modern built environment does not drain joy from our lives. If it does not drain joy why should we add this chair? I feel that it support the thesis.
Site:
Grassland
Description:
Ø There are two chairs which seems normally.
Ø When people sit down on these chairs, chairs will get the weight of
them and do response.
Ø The lighter one’s chair will fall down slowly, and the heavier one’s
chair will be lifted up the same degree of the other’s falling.
Ø The speaker will say ‘Oh, you are so heavy that lift your friend up’
Target
audience: Couples, Friends
Cool idea, its like a see-saw park bench right? I think it needs a different approach for trying to get people to reflect than just having a speaker. Maybe a plaque or something that people can read.
Scenario
A pair of people, who are good friends and
know each other very well, go to sit on the chairs. Suddenly, the chairs move
slowly, and the heavier one is lifted by the lighter one. It seems
anti-physical sense. And the speaking makes them laugh.
It feels like the represent the game we player at the child. Very cool while people saw on the public space and easily attract more people coming after one or two people had a try. I would think the last phrase could be more exaggerate than announcement by speaker in order to create a fun environment.
Agree with Aster, but this would be a little negative to show people's weight, some people will be sensitive and get angry on that.
