Recompose concept cards 1-4 (sketch added)

U-shape seat # Lyndon Comments added

thesis based: “Society has too many prohibitions and too few invitations”
I like this idea of an invitation to be social. It ties into thesis 2 quite a lot as well. Having white boards and screens up which people use to communicate rather than talk face to face, supports thesis two by showing that people are anti-social and would rather interact with a board then face to face. Instead of having whiteboards for all the chairs you could have a screen which reads out tweets for the station where people could have conversations. Reflecting the idea that people want to be social in anti-social ways.
Technic/equipment: whiteboard, marked pen, eraser and chairs

lighting seat - concept card 2 # Lyndon Comments Added

Thesis based: "Our modern built environment drains joy from our lives"
I like the idea of a chair that people can relax in while they are waiting for the ferry. However, where would a chair like this be placed? Where in the ferry terminal would it be able to fit? If it was going in the QUT GP terminal this terminal is undercover so it might need to use power rather than solar panels. Again I feel like this might be trying to do too much, is it trying to give people somewhere to relax or somewhere to learn more about the ferry? I would narrow it down to doing one of these two things and then take a stance on the thesis.
This is a pretty cool idea, it is so sweet to have warming system. I suggest added a notification, just increase people fell a sleep and miss the ferry.
Technic used: Touch-screen, solar power, video and interactive gesture.
Site: corner of ferry station

Concept of Nicholas #Lyndon Comments Added.

Concept1Strange Bench

This one is similar with Crystal's talking box
This is way to similar to Crystals concept. I think the idea of having sensors is a great addition to Crystals concept but we need this to be more different. Perhaps something where the chair actually lights up telling people where to sit or not to sit. For example in a bus or ferry station people will often avoid sitting next to other people. If one person sits down the seat next to them lights up green while the rest stay red.
This idea is good with simple and fun. It is very good to use sensor to break the silence between two strangers and have a good mood and atmosphere to start to make a conversation. Similar with sound idea, if possible to prepare some topic will helpful to keep conversation going or set some categories to match people with same interests.
Even better, using Mackymacky will bring better interaction on our installation, One thing we need to consider is how to make the metal coils invisible, because people may not sit on it if they realize something on the bench.
ThesisPublic spaces are anti-social spaces
Stance: Support
Site: Queens street, Park, Public transport station

Description:
Ø  There are two metal coils built-in the two sides of bench as sensors to detect is there people sit on the bench.
Ø  These coils are connect with Macky Macky. When there are two people sitting down on the bench, coils will be connected, and this will trigger that Macky Macky arouses a signal to speaker
Ø  Then the speaker will say Hi guys, what’s the weather like today?, Don’t be nervousI’m just a robot and do not try to find me“Could you guys say Hello to your friends.”
Target audience
All of group of people, especially those who just focus on the mobile phone once they sit down.
Scenario
A young guy sit on a bench in the Queens street and take out mobile from package to scan his Facebook and Twitter. Few minutes later, there is someone sit on the other side of this bench and the facility detects this situation and triggers the speaker to work. In the beginning, both of them feel weird and curious. And they try to find where gives out this sound. Few seconds later, they start follow the instruction of the speaker and start a conversation.

Concept2Weird Door

Thesis: Our modern built environment drains joy from our lives
Stance: Challenge
How is this challenging the idea? Is it trying to say that doors are exciting parts of our lives? Or is it supporting the idea that our lives are boring so we need to add a weird door to make it more exciting? Perhaps it is more aligned with Thesis three and that it is an invitation and people should see every door as an invitation.
Site: Open space, like square and park
Site needs to be more specific, would it be in the middle of the park? Or at one of the edges? Would it be easy to see or hard to find?
Description:
Ø  This is just a door with a frame.
Ø  If could, it should be minimal or even postmodernism style.
Why is this important? Justify the type of people it is trying to appeal to or attract.
Ø  There is a key and an instruction about how to open this door.
Ø  When people pass this door, it should have a sound filled by scientific feeling.
Target audience: All people
Scenario:
There is a door standing on the middle of grassland or square. A lot of people surround this door with curiosity. Someone tries to open this door, but he doesn’t follow the instruction and fails. Then, the other one tries to open this door following the instruction. It is working and he pass this door with a special sound.

The general idea is good however personally think its too simple. The unopened door people may think it is one abstract sculpture and the final result may make people feel the sense of  they tried endeavour to open that door and just receive this.

It is a interesting idea and remind me about the movie Monsters University.People's curiosity may influence their behaviors, once there is someone open the door, the others will know the answer, if we thinking about add different reaction in open the door, people will be more surprised.

Concept 3: Weight Overturn Chair

Thesis: Our modern built environment drains joy from our lives
Stance: Deny
Again how does this deny the thesis? If we are denying we are saying that our modern built environment does not drain joy from our lives. If it does not drain joy why should we add this chair? I feel that it support the thesis.
Site: Grassland
Description:
Ø  There are two chairs which seems normally.
Ø  When people sit down on these chairs, chairs will get the weight of them and do response.
Ø  The lighter one’s chair will fall down slowly, and the heavier one’s chair will be lifted up the same degree of the other’s falling.
Ø  The speaker will say ‘Oh, you are so heavy that lift your friend up’
Target audience: Couples, Friends
Cool idea, its like a see-saw park bench right? I think it needs a different approach for trying to get people to reflect than just having a speaker. Maybe a plaque or something that people can read.
Scenario

A pair of people, who are good friends and know each other very well, go to sit on the chairs. Suddenly, the chairs move slowly, and the heavier one is lifted by the lighter one. It seems anti-physical sense. And the speaking makes them laugh.

It feels like the represent the game we player at the child. Very cool while people saw on the public space and easily attract more people coming after one or two people had a try. I would think the last phrase could be more exaggerate than announcement by speaker in order to create a fun environment.
Agree with Aster, but this would be a little negative to show people's weight, some people will be sensitive and get angry on that.

Concept 3 #Lyndon, Nicholas Comments Added

Sound Recorder

Thesis Based on:
“Public Spaces are Anti-Social Spaces"
Is this challenging or supporting? By needing a sound recorder to talk share with others maybe it makes a statement about how anti-social people are.
I think it is both challenging and supporting...we might discuss at next meeting.
Context of Use:
This installation will be used in a park  or anywhere else people not in time rush. People some time need to pour out to a stranger without been weird, a Sound recorder can make this happen.

Concrete scenario of use
‘walker A walking though queens park and seen a notice board with introduction for a sound recorder. He was upside for weeks, and he do not want to talk to familiar people, he decided to try sound recorder and listen a stranger’s record. He feels good after he finally speak out the reason he upside.
Maybe the strangers record doesn't match the value of this guy, so he feels more angry about this.
Yes, he definitely might be, that is good point, we may thinking about positive and negative this concept relevant.

installation description

The installation include two part. A sound recorder, and a notice board.
Maybe on the notice board we can ask people why they have not shared this with someone else before?
But if we add this on the board would improve the barrier of participant.
OK, I will leave this for next discussion.

The notice board will be put on the top of sound recorder, showing people how to sound recorder works.

Recorder can only keep one record at one time, when user take a sound record, they can not choose the sound listener, the next user can only take a new sound record after they finish listen to the late sound record.
I think it's better to have a bigger storage and provide recording randomly. But each record will be broadcast just once. It will increase the anonymity.
But what if someone record without listen?

Sound recorder installation will be used for people social communicate without face to face communication.

Simple implement and create a surprise for people always is a good idea. Personally think it will be better to have fun or amuse props come with sound may decrease the hostility from visitor. Plus, i think its hard to get people back again as its looks like no link between each sound, i would like to suggest to come with some rules to make it like a game etc. Lastly, i would suggest to provide a machine to make player to have a scale comments, how were they satisfied with this amazing experiences?

Concept 2 Talking Box #Lyndon Comments Added

Talking box

Thesis Based on:
"Our modern built environment drains joy from our lives"
What stance are we taking. Trying to break peoples routines get them to enjoy spaces more.
Context of Use:
This installation will be used in bus station or a ferry station.
Again more specific.
Concrete scenario of use
‘A is going get CityCat to workhe go to the ferry as usual, there are two row of  benches all of them face the river, there is no chance to face the other people and talk to them, people sit one by one and A started to look at his phone. Suddenly, a voice came out from the back of benches. It said: “hey, guys, I can not see any interesting on you phone. A and an other people nearby trying to find out what happened, and they both pick up their phone.

installation description
The installation is a small box with speaker inside.
This box will be putted on bus station benches.
The speaker will have personality to talking to people who sit on the benches.
When people sit on the benches, the box may talking to get their attention, they may invited talking to each other. For example: “hey, how are you?” “I know you are looking at you phone, am I right?” “people next to you told me you are beautiful”.
People will notice this talking box and get their attention out of their phone.
There is not a lot of opportunity for reflections. Maybe the box could ask people are they have finished talking how much fun they had?
Do we need to add some recorder or note to get feedback?

Personally like this idea as its create a good start for communication between strangers. And the equipment of this project are quite simple and easily to implement. But, sometimes, people may think their privacy was infringed or they had a important phone call. I would suggest may have a less direct as an opening. Secondly, it will be better to create some topic ahead of project start to avoid awkward silence meanwhile provide a method to measure the quality of project(interesting topic, smile or bad face, how long they spent on specific topic etc).

Concept 1 SOS Footprint #Lyndon Comments added

Concept 1SOS”footprint

Thesis Based on:
“Public Spaces are Anti-Social Spaces"
Context of Use:
This installation will be used in a park  or anywhere else people not in time rush.
Need to be more specific on the context. Where exactly the installation will be placed.
Concrete scenario of use

‘walker A is going to city and walking cross the Queens Park, he found there are many footprint in front of each benches with “SOS”, he is a helpful Guy so he following the footprint and find a cabin, he was curiosity and he went into the cabin, these a projector inside and shows him “Do not wait to talk to the people only in need of help." then he meet the other guy was tricked like him, they talking to each other to share this experience.

installation description

The installation include three part. footprints with “SOS on it, A movable enclosed cabin space, and projector.
Would the SOS be inside the footprints or separate letters and then footprints? Might want to say box rather than cabin.
Right, box is more relevant to our design.

The footprints will be putted on the park path way, all the footprint will lead people to cabin.

Cabin will be set on the other side of the park, has projector inside.

When people following the footprint into the cabin, the projector will show them different words on the wall. For example: “You are so helpful people, I am sure you would like sharing experience with the next guy come into this cabin." so they might have conversation with the other strangers with this trick.
I think the link to the thesis is a little bit hard to understand. Perhaps the projector could just display the thesis and prompt people to reflect on it "public spaces are anti-social splaces... Discuss"
Good point, I will add this into concept card. We can get more advice from class.

People can leave note in the cabin.
Great way to get peoples reflections

We will observing them by the whole time
Would we use a camera inside the box? or would it be someone inside? Is the box for one person only?
The box can be bigger than one person, but I think we may not be inside, It is good idea we put a camera inside.

Personally think the clue at the beginning may confused people and much easier attract police officer's attention than curious people to have a visit. And if we try create horror situation or somebody desperately need help, it may better to add more sentences and images on the pathway. For the ending part, a little bit concern about if people find the result was they were cheated for fun, they may overreact and occur some unexpected situation. Plus, the whole recording may better than observed by person.

Concept 3: Thesis 2, AntiSocial Alarm. #Sketch to be added.

Anti-Social Alarm

Thesis Based on: "Public Spaces are Anti-Social Spaces"

Position Taken: This installation is supporting the idea that public spaces are anti-social spaces.

Context of Use: The installation would be installed on the platforms of the King George Bus station, where people queue for busses.

Technologies Used: Clear Perspex, red box, red button and switch, double sided tape to adhere to wall. Poster and marker for tally.

How will it Engage?: The anti-social alarm box will be placed in an obvious location near where users wait for the bus. The box will look similar to a fire alarm with the exception that the text of the poster above will read in-case of social interaction please break glass.

How can people reflect?: People are able to reflect by reading the small plaque underneath the alarm box which will ask people if being social is now anti-social and having fun is a bad thing in public spaces.

Scenario:
Users 1 is on their way home from a long day at work. He is running through the motions as per usual as he lines up for his bus with the rest of the regular commuters. As he is looking around waiting for the bus he notices an emergency button which seems out of place. Upon closer inspection he finds that it reads in case of social situation please break glass. He laughs to himself before zoning out on his phone.

Personally like this reverse thinking, to create bad joke or trick to create "huge" reflection on public space. Here are some doubts:
1. how to control the "huge" effection. If some serious poeple were frightened to call the police, it is hardly to finish the project;
2.Croweded environment if create some panic situation, the passergeners who are ignorant of fact may flee around and bring huge problem.

Love this idea, it will successful get people attention and easy to make them thinking about our thesis.
I suggest we make more alarm box just in case someone really broke it without check the poster.

Concept 2: Thesis 3 Sometimes Never Adventure Path #Sketch to be added.

Always Sometimes Never Adventure Path

Thesis Based on: "Society has too many prohibitions and too few invitations"

Position Taken: This installation will help to challenge this thesis by inviting users to take the road less travelled challenging their perception about a lack of options.

Context of Use: The installation would be installed on the top level of the King George Bus Station

Technologies Used: Self Adhesive Polyester tape with arrows and words. Post It notes, Poster, Markers

How will it Engage?: The word Always with an arrow pointing towards the escalator will be placed near the exit on the second level of the bus station. The word Sometimes with an arrow pointing towards the stairs will also be displayed. When people reach the top of the stairs of escalator there will be an arrow with the word never pointing towards the small security door exit. Users who are interested will follow the arrow to the door where they will find the button to open the door and a post-it note saying press me.

How can people reflect?: When people choose between the escalators and stairs they will being to start thinking about the decisions that they are able to make. The never arrow presents an invitation to an experience they may never have realized existed. When they reach the door to exit there will be a poster asking them why they choose the path less traveled. Markers will be available so that users can write down their response before exiting.

Scenario:
Users 1 is on his way into the city for a night out with some friends. As he is making his way up from the bus station he sees the arrows pointing to the escalator and stairs with the words always and sometimes. They decide the take the stairs to be different for a change. When they reach the top of the stairs they see the word never will an arrow pointing to a small corner. They are intrigued and follow the arrow to the small doorway. They see the poster and leave a brief message before continuing on their way.

I like the idea of create adventure story at bus station, it looks like design one ARG game on the public place. Here are some doubts:
1. the content need to update frequently for keeping more people engaged. And personally think, the final reward perhaps set a reward such as coupon etc;
2. need to ensure the pathway of game will not affect other or threat public safety;
3. the message left on the final spot may need to have a clear logic which allow next player to continue the game.
This idea probable easily to implement and bring immersive gaming experiences for participators.

Ix Floor Panels #Lyndon Comments Added

Additional appendix:
Thesis based:1&3
Need to choose 1 specific thesis. And then provide the stance which you are taking in regard to that thesis. Is this supporting thesis 1? In saying that the urban environment drains our joy so we need to add in more interactive fun things?
I feel like you are trying to do too much with the floor panels. They are displaying timetable information but they are also a game? I would suggest having it only as a game so that its purpose is a lot clearer.
Also how are people going to reflect on the thesis through the interaction with the game? Maybe it could ask users if they had fun or if they prefer playing to sitting by themselves.

I like the notification part when citycat is coming, but I suggest add some details of this flow game and be more specific in game rule, make sure people will participate because some one may thought it is silly to play in public place and the first people could make a great influence on the others.

Technic used:removable and water-proof panel,  projector, lighting system

Concept 1: Thesis 3, Private public cinema #photo to be added.

The Publics Private Cinema
Thesis Based on: "Society has too many prohibitions and too few invitations"
Position Taken: This installation will help to challenge this thesis by using prohibition as a form of invitation
Context of Use: The cinema would be installed on the second level of the King George Bus Station
Technologies Used: Projector, Projection screen, Table, Chairs, Large cardboard sign, Coloured markers
How will it Engage?: The projection will play movies on a loop and engage with users as they walk past the installation. There will be a large signs at the borders of the installation. These will inform that the cinema is reserved and they are not to sit at the chairs or watch the movies.
How can people reflect?: When people sit down to watch the movie at the table, there will be a message on the table congratulating them on breaking the rules and asking them why they broke the rules. Coloured markers will be provided on the table so that users can write down their feelings.
Scenario:
Users 1 is walking on his way home to the bus station. As he is making his way to the escalator down to the bus terminal he sees a movie being played on one of the walls with chairs set up around it. As he gets closer he finds that the table and chairs in front of the movie are reserved. He stops for a moment and watches the film and considers sitting, there is nothing to stop him and his bus is not due for another 5 minutes. He takes a seat at the table, where he reads the message. He scribbles down why he chose to break the rules before enjoying the film.

It was  a good idea to create interactive activity on the bus station. Attracting walking people by on-show movie is easily catch their attention. User feedback will also help cinema to collect original data. Here are some doubts for this project:
1. Bus station is limited place especially on the peak time, if we create people flow on the crowded environment, it may cause safety issue;
2. It hardly to control time for each movie and try to not affect passenger to take a bus. Meanwhile, cinema may not willing to put a big hit movie on the loop so that the content chose become a big question;
3. The general idea is create another cinema for user which means we need to create a high quality video room which requires space, light and high quality of equipment. The budget and maintain will may need to take a deeply consideration.
Overall, it was a great idea to create interactive space on public area, however, it will be better to think some features of bus station.

I like this idea, testing people about break the rules in this way, consider about the potential problem we mentioned last meeting, I suggest we move this idea a little bit, change the position to the entry of the station and we might no need to ask department of transport and main roads.
